What is a composite resin veneer? How does it differ from a porcelain veneer?
A composite resin dental veneer is made of plastic composite material, while a porcelain dental veneer is made of a high quality ceramic material. The composite resin veneer costs less than a porcelain veneer. Many years ago, composite veneers were more popular because of their low cost and because the porcelain veneer technology was still in its developmental stages.
However, nowadays most dentists prefer to use porcelain veneers even if they are more expensive than composite veneers. Porcelain veneers are a one-time investment that lasts for many years without any damage, whereas composite veneers may not last beyond one or two years in most cases.
The weakness of the composite veneers comes from its own natural characteristics. The composite material is more prone to wear and tear, it does not bond very strongly with the teeth, and it does not have the kind of dimensional stability that a porcelain veneer does. Teeth have to undergo strong friction and grinding on a daily basis. Therefore, the veneer must be strong enough to withstand that pressure.
Another advantage of porcelain veneers over composite veneers is the aesthetics. Porcelain is a material that comes closest to the natural tooth material in terms of looks. It mimics the natural translucence of the teeth almost perfectly. It reflects a similar amount of light as a natural tooth which makes it appear like one. It is difficult to distinguish between a high quality porcelain veneer and a natural tooth.
Porcelain veneers also bond very strongly with teeth. Therefore, there is little chance of the veneer coming off or getting damaged while in use. The superior qualities of porcelain veneers can last for several years and give an excellent value for money to the user over a period of time.
