What can you expect before, during and after the dental implant procedure?

The dental implant procedure is complex and should be performed by a dental surgeon who specializes in this procedure. The big advantage of a dental implant is that it replaces the missing tooth almost perfectly in terms of functionality as well as aesthetics. It needs no special care and the patient can use it almost as naturally as the rest of the teeth.

Before the procedure

Adequate planning is required for a dental implant. The more time the dentist invests in planning and preparation, the greater are the chances of a successful procedure. The dentist must examine the teeth and gums for any indications of tooth decay or gum disease. The dental implant must proceed only when any oral infections have been ruled out. It may require oral x-rays to determine the precise condition before the implant. The dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area, or even IV sedation in a few cases where the patient’s anxiety levels are high.

During the procedure

Once the patient is comfortable and local anesthesia is administered, the dentist begins to drill the precise target area. The portion of the gum where the implant has to be placed is cut and lifted. A small hole is drilled into the jawbone at the precise point of the original tooth. The implant is then placed in this hole, and the gum is stitched over it.

In some cases, bone grafting may be required where the bone has receded and there is not sufficient base for the implant. Once the implant is placed, it is allowed to heal and integrate with the bone over a period of about one to two months. During this intervening period, the patient is fitted with a temporary crown so that normal oral functions can be performed. Once the gum tissue has fully healed, the dental crown is fitted on the implant.

After the procedure

The dentist will advise the patient to avoid eating very hot, cold or hard foods for a day or two after the procedure. Once the patients are accustomed to the implant, they can use it just like any other normal teeth. There is no special care or maintenance required for the implant. Oral hygiene should be properly maintained and periodic dental visits should be made to ensure good long-term oral health.
